Just an FYI for everyone who is preparing for the attempt

Only 67 days until my CCIE Lab exam!

The clock is seriously ticking now and my first attempt at the CCIE Lab Exam in Routing and Switching is only 67 days away in Brussels.
I have booked my hotel, going to be staying at the NH Airport Hotel. I know it's not the cheapest but I know where it is!
I will be taking the Eurostar to get there. Pretty much every minute of the day that I am not sleeping is now taken up with reading/labbing something about the CCIE topics.

I will be posting more updates as I get closer

GNS3 Duplex Mismatch

If you have used GNS3 for any time you will have come across the error message 02:50:20.579: %CDP-4-DUPLEX_MISMATCH: duplex mismatch discovered on FastEthernet2/0 (not half duplex), with R4 FastEthernet0/0 (half duplex).
On a physical network any two cisco devices that are connected and have cdp enabled will monitor the status of the link and if there is a duplex mismatch you will get an error, which helps a lot.

However in GNS3 this error just seems to pop up for no reason, even if you have both ends set to full or auto.  ...  read more »

GNS3 Tutorial

After a very long week of working in the day and doing the INE Troubleshooting bootcamp in the evening I have finally got some downtime. It has been a great week of learning. I had to get the 32 router topology running in GNS before the bootcamp started. I ended up building a dedicated Ubuntu 64bit server with 16GB ram as a VM in ESXi5.1 After researching idlepc / idlemax values and all the fun that goes with running a large topology in GNS3 without it crashing I think I have finally done it.  ...  read more »

Tracking your study time effectivley

Now that the study focus is back on again, I really need to find a way of tracking my study time and see why I never seem to have any time to study. So I created this very simple spread sheet with 8 columns
Date, Subject, Reading, Videos, Labs, Other, Comments, Total

Then every time I do some study I will input the number of minutes and then the total column adds up the minutes. If the number by the end of the day is less than 5 hours (my target study time) then it goes red. This will let me see if I am actually studying efficiently or not.  ...  read more »

Back to the CCIE study

After a long summer of amusing the children and big projects at work, it is time to get back to the study! I had set myself a target to take the lab in July but it just didn't work out. So refreshed from the summer holidays I have set myself a very strict schedule to do one mock lab a week from now until January when my ccie lab is booked.  ...  read more »

IP Routing - Policy Routing

Policy routing is telling the router how you want traffic to be moved across a network, not necessarily what the router wants to do based on what's in its routing table. Let's think about 5 routers.

IP Routing - Static

Well this has certainly been a busy summer. But it's time to get back into it. So far we've gone over some switching and frame relay and now we start getting into the good stuff.

Before we get into routing protocols like EIGRP, OSPF and BGP let's take a look at some good old fashioned static routes. There are a couple ways to create a static router, you can point it to the next-hop address on a link or you can point it to just an outgoing interface.

For example:
R1(config)ip route 150.10.4.0 255.255.255.0 155.10.146.4

or

R1(config)ip route 150.10.6.0 255.255.255.0 fa0/0  ...  read more »

Frame Relay

Ever since I went to Cisco Live 2012 in San Diego I've been trying to determine just how much frame relay to cover. At Cisco Live it was stated, by Cisco, that there is no more frame relay switch (FRS) in the lab. This means no LMI gets provided and any frame relay configs will be back to back configs. I'm just going to cover configuring a back-to-back frame relay connection here. From my understanding this is about all we'll need to know to configure in the lab.  ...  read more »

Point-to-Point Protocol - PPP

There are the "versions" of PPP that I'm want to go over here.
1) PPP with PAP and CHAP
2) PPP with AAA Authentication
3) PPPoE

--Point-to-Point Protocol
PPP is the universal layer 2 encapsulation for serial (point-to-point) links. The 2 main features of PPP are LCP (Link Control Protocol) and NCP (Network Control Protocol). LCP can be used to negotiate an authentication scheme, link compression, or encryption, while NCP allows for running a layer 3 protocol on top of PPP by embedding the protocol's negotiation parameters into PPP.

Switching - Private VLANs

Private vlans is putting a vlan inside another vlan. Basically with private vlans you are taking users at a shared location and keeping them from talking to each other directly at layer 2. Let's say we have an office tower that has many different companies in this tower. The local ISP provider has installed a switch at this location to provide connectivity for all the different companies. (We'll say it's a 6509 switch, that can support a lot of connections.) The ISP provider is running layer 2 to this switch but they don't want the customers to be in the same vlan, or broadcast domain.  ...  read more »

Switching - MST

Multiple Spanning-Tree is taking multiple vlans and create single STP instance for those vlans. In 802.1D, "classic spanning-tree" there is one STP instance for all 4094 vlans. This is great if there is a very limited path option for traffic. However, if you design your network with redundant links and you want to load balance vlan traffic across different paths this may not be the best choice. On the other hand if we run PVST then we will get a separate STP instance for all 4094 vlans. This is great for breaking up our traffic paths, but this creates a of overhead.  ...  read more »

Switching - STP

This one is going to have a little length to it. We're going to go over STP and all of it's joys. Here's a list of all the STP topics that I'm going to cover:
-Root Bridge Election
-Load Balancing with port cost
-Load Balancing with port priority
-Tuning STP convergence timers
-Portfast
-Portfast default
-Uplinkfast
-Backbonefast
-BPDU guard
-BPDU guard default
-BPDU filter
-BPDU filter default
-Rootguard
-Loopguard
-UDLD

As you can see we have quit the list to get through, so let's get started.

Switching - 802.1q Tunneling

802.1q tagging is a method for tagging traffic in different vlans so that switches can keep the broadcast domains separate. Let's take it one step further and tag a tag. By taking traffic that is already 802.1q tagged and adding another tag on top of it we can create an 802.1q, or Q-in-Q, tunnel. This is a handy feature that service providers may use in a metro ethernet.  ...  read more »

Switching - EtherChannel Load Balancing

At this point we have some etherchannels up and running. You may now be curious as to how traffic gets across these etherchannels in an efficient and effective manner. Well we have load balancing that takes place so traffic flows across each link in the bundle. In my lab setup I have 4 3560-24PS switches. On these switches you can have up to 8 links in a single bundle. The default method for load balancing on these switches is based on the source mac address. Which you can see here:

Switching - EtherChannels

We have covered that I would consider the basics of switching. We've seen how to make a switchport an access port that an end user would connect to. We've setup trunks between switches utilizing DTP and with static configurations. We've taken a basic look at 802.1q, we've created a router-on-a-stick so we could route traffic between vlans, and we've setup VTP so we could tell all out network switches about vlans. Now let's get into some of the advanced topics. I'll start with EtherChanneling and go from there.  ...  read more »

Switching Basics - VTP

VTP comes in handy when you only want to create/modify/delete vlans on a single, or few, switches and have those vlan configurations propagate out to other switches. Of course you can just create/modify/delete vlans on each switch individually, but if you have 100's of switches that method could be a little time consuming. VTP won't tell the switchports which vlan they need to be assigned to, that joy is still done on a per switch/per interface basis. But at least you can tell the switches what vlans are out there.  ...  read more »

Switching Basics - Router-on-a-stick

Back to my office scenario that I made up. We have users in engineering, sales and HR in an office that is using 4 switches. We put the users in each vlan and we have created trunks between the switches. At this point users in each group can communicate with other users in the same group. We've made some progress, but we have more to go. Right now the users in the different vlans can not communicate between each other. In order for this to happen we need some Layer 3 action to take place. Now we can use a router for this or we can use an SVI on a layer 3 capable switch.  ...  read more »

Switching Basics - Static Trunks

Now we get to the second type of switching trunk, the statically set trunk. In order to statically create a trunk you need to disable DTP. To statically create a trunk it take more than the single switchport mode dynamic command.

First we need to set the trunk encapsulation, I'll go with 802.1q here. Second we enable the trunk, and finally we disable the negotiation.

SW1(config)#int fa0/13
SW1(config-if)#switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
SW1(config-if)#switchport mode trunk
SW1(config-if)#switchport nonegotiate

SW2(config)#int fa0/13  ...  read more »

Switching Basics - 802.1q Native Vlan

The difference between ISL and 802.1q is that ISL actually encapsulates a frame where 802.1q just inserts a tag. Yes this is simplified, but from what I can tell this is about all we need to understand when implementing it. So with 802.1q each frame gets a tag that identifies the vlan that the frame belongs to. That is unless traffic comes into the native vlan. The native vlan is the one where traffic does not get tagged, it passes along its merry way without any tags. By default the native vlan is vlan 1. However, this can be changed.  ...  read more »

Switching Basics - Trunking Encapsulation

Alrighty, we have a dynamic trunk up between SW1 and SW2. At this point we could call it a day since the trunk is up, but that would take all the fun out of trunking. Let's work on setting the encapsulation of our trunk. So far the trunk came up and ISL was the negotiated encapsulation method. In and all Cisco network this would be fine, however if you have different vendor switches or even VoIP phones in your network you'll need to utilize 802.1q encapsulation.

First off lets just set out trunk to statically utilize ISL as our encapsulation method.

SW1#config t  ...  read more »

Switching Basics - Dynamic Trunking Formation

At this point we have users on each switch configured for their respective vlans. However, we have 4 switches and we need the users on the different switches to be able to talk to other users in their group. (We'll get to users in different groups talking to each other later, one step at a time)

So now we need to create trunks between all the switches so that all of the different vlan traffic will be passed between switches and all the users in each group can talk to other users in their group.  ...  read more »

Switching basics - Access Switchports

Let's start with some of the basics for switching. Let's say I have 4 switches that are connected together in a full mesh. Each switch has 3 links between each other. By default all switch ports are in vlan 1 as that is the default native vlan. (If you are reading this I assume you understand vlans, if not I certainly recommend reading a CCNA book or two to get these basic terms and concepts down).  ...  read more »

Let's get this party started

I've been studying for CCIE for a while now, but with new kids and work I haven't been able to spend the hardcore time studying that I would have liked. I have taken and passed the R/S written twice so I feel comfortable on the high level topics and I need to get the details all straight so I can walk into the lab and crush it. I personally don't take an exam unless I feel I can answer any question without hesitation. One thing that certainly helps cement concepts for me is when I have to teach those concepts to others. So I'm going to try this blog as a method for teaching.  ...  read more »

Pass RS exam at 3rd attempt.

It was Monday last week. Good news from cisco site was there.
My last two attempt was so bad. But, this time was different even though I got new lab version.
I met my study group every weekends and study & lab hard using IPexpert wb. It lasts several months. We researched every topic on cisco DOC. What I realized this time is "DOC CD is your great tutor". We also study using ccielabguide workbook for preparing real ccie questions. It is nice workbook to see before your lab exam.
I'm thinking to prepare another track from ccna level,,, after long vacation :)
